I cannot wait! ![]()
Just so looking forward to this season starting, sat on my arse all afternoon drinking beer and seeing the new teams/cars.
Pipe up F1 fans, what do we think of the current line up? What do you think of the new rule changes - Primarily the fact no re-fueling is allowed.
Michael Schumacher's return. Button vs. Hamilton. Ayrton Senna's nephew in the sport. There's just so much to talk about already!
BBC F1 Website.
No Re-fueling? What at all? Does that mean all cars come with a bigger fuel tank now?
I'm not really a fan of F1 as I find it too boring but this piqued my interest!
Yeh the cars now have to carry from the start of the race around 230 litres depending on how long the circuit is and how the consumption os on each particular track. That much fuel weighs around 160kg, so this factored into the cars can have a massive effect on the way they handle and how they wear down their tyres.
Pit stops now will be halved depending on how fast the pit crew can change 4 tyres. This is normally around 3-4 seconds, but a pit stop usually lasted around 8 seconds because of the fuel being pumped into the car.
In a video on the BBC site, Martin Brundle was saying at the start of a race, the cars will be around 5 seconds slower per lap than they would be in qualifying due to the extra weight involved.
Hmmm it's a definate possibility, i'm sure we'll see it at some point of the season!
That is also one of my lottery dreams aswell, flying around the world with them, fully first classed up in the best hotels. Watching the race in VIP hospitality.
That and my Scan Jellyfish ![]()
Apparently the new teams are woefully off the pace. That said, the top four teams have 8 top drivers and hopefully this will result in an excellent race for the title. I just hope that disgusting cheat (and the finest F1 driver in history) Schumacher has an utterly woeful season. Or better still gets a taste of his own medicine and is rammed off the road by a rival who goes on to be champion at his expense. Not that I'm still bitter about 1994...
They are ridiculously slow, well the ones who have even made it onto a track yet. Might be seeing the 107% rule come into play again this season.
I for one can't wait for Sunday ![]()
I really hope that Jenson proves the nay sayers wrong and shows that he can still cut it in a comparable car to Lewis.
I think think that a Ferrari in Alonso's hand's will be a very tough challenge for all the others to beat though. I would say that, much as it pains me, that he will be the one to beat this season.
I do hope that I am proved wrong on this and will reserve the right to change my mind on Sunday after the race ![]()
I hope Schumacher gets a good car and comes back as good as ever. Would love to see him prove he is the best of the best.

Someone farted in Sutil's tank, though, and hoped it would get round the track.
Even so, that's only good enough for 9th now.
Once again, we see Rossberg at the top. We'll see whether that transfers into race pace.
Looks like It'll be Merc vs McLaren Merc over the weekend if this form carries on.
Good lord that HRT car looks like it's driving on ice...

Fascinating insight into the ace up McLaren's sleeve - http://www.planet-f1.com/news/3213/6016 … rear-wing-
At least the teams (mainly the whingers at Red Bull) have accepted its legal and will now piss £400,000,000 up the wall copying it rather than dragging it through scrutineers again and again.
Listening to the conversation during second practice, its interesting to note how Schumacher is immediately trying to dominate the Mercedes Team despite being told he couldn't. Lets hope Rosberg pastes him.

The FIA have ruled it legal because the actual rule says 'cars cannot have movable aero devices', which means wings that flex to change the characteristics of the car at different speeds. A few years ago, some teams had wings that stiffened at speed.
As the link posted states, its actually the driver doing the movement which affects the internal airflow (notice how most other cars have holes at the tip of the nose - McLaren have it on top of the cockpit) and they can't reasonably expect the drivers to not move. It's an interpretation of a vague rule, just like the double diffuser.
Hmm okay, but this was the comment from one the BBC Commentators
BBC Sport's Andrew Benson in Bahrain: "There's an interesting twist to the McLaren rear wing/funnel argument. Some believe that the drivers actually have a role in making the system work. The rumour is that they can move their knees to block the airflow through the car to a degree, which would do something called 'stall' the rear wing - ie, make it work less well - thereby further increasing the car's straightline speed. During the break between sessions, I spoke to a leading engineer from a rival team, who said that if that was true, the system was in his opinion 'definitely illegal', on the basis that the drivers' knees would be affecting the airflow over the car, and would therefore effectively be a movable aerodynamic device, which are banned. Speculation is rife that one of McLaren's rivals may protest the car at the end of the race."
So we'll see....
One thing that interests me about this is everyone immediately latched onto the 'stall' idea. I was under the impression that stalling a wing element whilst reducing the 'lift' (or in this case downforce) component also massively increased drag, which obviously would not be a desirable outcome for a F1 car looking to gain top end speed.
The person he spoke to was Bob Bell of Renault. If it were illegal, Mercedes GP & Red Bull wouldn't be moving to recreate it, rather boycott it like was attempted by the double diffuser.
Why can't anyone take Charlie Whitings word for it anymore!

Was a damn good session, very entertaining, nice to see Red Bull stick on the front, interesting to see Rosberg pip Schumacher and likewise Massa with Alonso. Shaping up to be a good race.
Not a bad start for Schumacher. Could get a podium with that.
Could do with a very good drive, depends a lot on how the front runners cope with tyres. I don't think anyone has won here from further back than 4th before though, so he'll have to really put the work in if he wants it.
I notice Button and Schumacher are the only 2 in the top 10 who didn't dip below 1:55 in any of the sessions though, and Vettel was the only one who managed a 1:53, even Sutil in the Force India pulled out a better time in Q2 than either Button or Schumacher managed in all 3 sessions.

That was pretty uneventful really, barely any overtakes at all and when there was it was usually due to someone being broken and falling back.
Managed to catch the second half, was a bit uneventful to be honest. Hopefully it'll improve as the season progresses.
Was a typical first race, nothing new. Got to see the real pace of some of the teams though. I honestly think that Ferrari and McLaren are the ones to beat this year. With Red Bull and Mercedes very close behind.
The new teams were basically found out, with piss poor cars and the like. It'll be 12 months before they really come into it tbh.
Can't wait for the next race though at Albert Park, really like the Australian GP venue!
I'd have put the cars Ferrari and Red Bull pace setting with McLaren and Mercedes a bit behind, at least for the moment.
The McLaren is a bit lacking in downforce and is losing time in slower sections despite having a 5KPH advantage down the straights. McLaren definitely have the potential but need to get a bit of work done first. Red Bull only really suffered yesterday because Webber stuffed his qualifying lap and got stuck behind everyone else and obviously Vettel had technical issues (apparently not the exhaust though, it threw a spark plug).
dull, dull, dull, dull...more dull than ever in fact. i was so hopeful that this season would be the one to take F1 back to the days of old and god forbid, overtaking, but no that was too much to ask!

+1
Races in the blazing heat are nearly always dull though... They should schedule all races in the rainy season - nothing like a bit of rain to bring some quality entertainment to proceedings...
Indeed.
Cars in the past has less ideal aerodynamics, so there was less of a detriment to be behind the car infront. In that race, you saw that getting behind the car infront meant your car instantly overheated.
fit all tracks with sprinklers more like, to come on at a random time during the race and last for between 2 - 40 laps

take the snipers from Bad Company 2 and set them up in vaious tactical places around the track, kind of like Rollerball for the 2000's

Sod it, let's just make it into Rollcage without the weapons.
Without weapons? I saw your twitter feed - surely we've found the solution to your Ferrari/Alonso problem!
I'm willing to let this race slide on the entertainment stakes - its never given a good race in its short history and is always an anti-climax when they use it as the season opener. Roll on Australia!
It's worth noting that every single team principal and a good deal of the drivers have been up-in-arms stating that the new rules are not conductive to competitive racing, enough so that Bernie has stated that they're definitely going to be tweaking the rules, if not radically shaking them up.

Not random - we should be able to vote when it happens via the red button. And even choose what comes out of the sprinklers - water, oil or acid.
that is an idea just bursting with win
